The Butler Range occurrence is located 4.8 kilometres due south of the summit of Ingenika Cone, approximately 96 kilometres north of the community of Germansen Landing.

Regionally, the area is underlain by argillite, greywacke, wacke and conglomerate turbidites of the Neoproterozoic Swannell Formation (Ingenika Group), mudstone, siltstone, shale and fine clastic sedimentary rocks of the Neoproterozoic Tsaydiz and Stelkuz formations (Ingenika Group) and limestone, marble and calcareous sedimentary rocks of the Neoproterozoic Espee Formation (Ingenika Group).

A band of limestone of the Neoproterozoic Espee Formation (Ingenika Group) outcrops 5 kilometres south of Ingenika Cone on the north end of the Butler Range. This band continues southeastward for at least 10 kilometres. The limestone is light grey, medium-grained and well bedded. Streaks of white, slightly coarser grained and thinly bedded carbonate accompany the limestone.

In 1954, a sample (389R) taken 4.8 kilometres due south of the summit of Ingenika Cone analyzed 54.82 per cent CaO, 0.21 per cent MgO, 0.76 per cent insolubles, 0.18 per cent Al2O3 plus Fe2O3, 43.14 per cent CO2 and 0.70 per cent water (Geological Survey of Canada Memoir 274, page 68).
